First Step to Starting A Shoe Line

Shoe Girls Studio is a footwear and accessories design and development agency with global production in many countries including Italy, China, and Mexico. In the 3rd edition of the Fashion Designer Survival Guide, the Shoe Girls shared a few tips about the footwear development process:

●      Develop multiple styles on the same last. You will be able to use the same components across many styles plus your product will have sizing continuity.

●      Use what is available. Try to design around or find matching components from open market materials for your design.

●      Remember colorways! For a single style do 2-3 colorways, varying your materials in a single style can make a 1 style feel like 3 separate designs.

●      Don’t do half sizing. Unless half sizes are key for your product’s consumer. This will help minimize the number or lasts, molds and components that you will need to pay for.

If you are starting your own shoe line, Shoe Girls Studio has a digital course to walk you through the entire footwear design and development process in just 2 hours. The course features 30+ videos, design templates, spec sheets, factory and supplier lists and a sustainability guide to understand how to do it responsibly.
